Redefining Super-Telephoto Portability
Offering super-telephoto reach in an ultra-light package, the Sony FE 400mm f/4.5 GM OSS Lens packages G Master optical precision into one of the most portable 400mm primes ever made. With high-speed autofocus support, advanced internal stabilization, and a weather-resistant design, this lens is optimized for handheld use everywhere from football sidelines to photographing wildlife deep in the woods.
Optimized for Handheld Use
Avoiding the traditional size and weight difficulties associated with super-telephoto setups, this 400mm f/4.5 is easy to bring with you for a day of handheld shooting, ensuring you'll have the reach you need in any situation.
- A maximum aperture of f/4.5 allows the lens to be shorter and lighter without significantly compromising light-gathering abilities when paired with the OSS.
- Thanks to the use of a single front element, the center of gravity of the lens is shifted toward the camera body for a well-balanced design perfect for handheld use.
- With a length of only 9.5" and weighing 2.2 lb, this lens looks closer to a 70-200 f/2.8 than a super-telephoto prime. Compared to the FE 400mm f/2.8, this f/4.5 version weighs 4.2 lb less and measures 4.6" shorter in length.
High-Speed AF, Powerful OSS
Designed for speed, precision, and reliability, the focusing and stabilization systems make this lens perfectly suited for capturing sports and wildlife without a tripod.
- Two XD (extreme dynamic) linear motors generate fast and responsive AF performance that's equally quiet and smooth. The focusing system is compatible with continuous still and video shooting speeds up to 120 fps.
- Full-time manual focus override is possible, and an internal focusing design is used to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
- A focus range limiter and four focus hold buttons provide greater control over your autofocus responsiveness to ensure you never miss a shot.
- An advanced Optical SteadyShot image stabilization system ensures sharp imagery while shooting handheld. Three modes are available: standard (Mode 1), panning (Mode 2), and moving subjects (Mode 3).
G Master Optical Performance
Sony's G Master designation is only granted to their lenses with the greatest sharpness, smoothest bokeh, quick responsiveness, and best overall performance. This 400mm f/4.5 bundles this optical fidelity into a uniquely compact telephoto prime.
- Super ED and ED elements suppress chromatic aberration and yield high edge-to-edge sharpness, even at the maximum aperture, for greater flexibility in cropping and editing.
- Nano AR Coating II suppresses flare for rich contrast and bright colors in a variety of lighting conditions.
- Rounded 11-blade diaphragm results in a circular bokeh quality with smooth focus falloff for crisp subject separation.
Professional Operability and Design
- For even greater portability, the included tripod foot can easily be removed for a slimmed down design that's ideal for handheld use.
- Customizable Function Ring can be assigned to control a variety of camera and exposure settings.
- An intuitive control layout puts all of the frequently used buttons and switches in easy-to-reach locations on the lens barrel, allowing you to make changes without looking away from the viewfinder.
- Dust- and moisture-resistant design includes rubber gaskets at each seam and a rubber ring sealing the lens mount for use in inclement weather conditions.
- Front lens element has a fluorine coating that repels water, oil, and other contaminants and makes the lens easier to clean.
- A 95mm front filter thread makes it simple to add screw-in filters for additional creative control.
- Hybrid construction uses both metal and plastic components to balance durability and portability.
Teleconverter Compatibility
The FE 400mm f/4.5 GM OSS is compatible with the separately available Sony FE 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters. These teleconverters can be used while still retaining full autofocus and auto-exposure capabilities. When used, the 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters will provide effective focal lengths and apertures of 560mm f/6.3 and 800mm f/8, respectively.
